Em 1943, a colecionadora Peggy Guggenheim organizou, na sua galeria Art of This Century, em Nova Iorque, uma das primeiras exposições dedicadas exclusivamente ao trabalho de mulheres artistas nos Estados Unidos. Com o título Exhibition by 31 Women, Guggenheim pretendia dar destaque às obras das mulheres artistas, não raras vezes negligenciadas pela mentalidade patriarcal da época e reduzidas a meras musas, imitadoras ou companheiras de célebres artistas homens.

Provenientes da Europa e dos Estados Unidos, as artistas selecionadas para 31 Mulheres, que contou com figuras consagradas mas também apresentou novos talentos, estavam sobretudo ligadas ao surrealismo e à arte abstrata. Conscientes dos desafios que enfrentavam pelo simples facto de serem mulheres, estas artistas recorreram às linguagens artísticas dominantes da sua época para contrariar a norma, reinterpretando as tendências do surrealismo e do expressionismo abstrato a fim de denunciar os preceitos patriarcais em que estes movimentos se fundavam.

Join us for an exclusive guided tour at MAC/CCB of “31 Women. An Exhibition by Peggy Guggenheim”.

In 1943 the collector Peggy Guggenheim organized one of the first exhibitions dedicated exclusively to the work of women artists in the United States at her New York gallery Art of This Century. Titled Exhibition by 31 Women, one of Guggenheim’s objectives was to highlight the contribution of women artists, who had often been dismissed as muses, imitators, or companions of famous male artists by the patriarchal mindset of the time.

The artists selected for 31 Women—which included well-established female creators and emerging talents—came from Europe and the United States, many of whom were linked to Surrealism and abstract art. Aware of the challenges they faced for being women, these artists often went against the grain by utilizing the dominant artistic languages of their time: they reinterpreted the contributions of Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism to highlight the patriarchal precepts such movements were based on.
